K9 Nose Work is the hottest new sport in the dog world! It is a fun game that can be played around the house, as well as a sport that teams can compete in. K9 Nose Work is inspired by the training methodology of professional detection dogs but applies the concepts to create a fun, recreational activity that any dog can enjoy.
Nose Work classes give dogs an outlet for their natural desire to use their nose. Handlers are taught to read their dog's body language, support their dog's search efforts, and build their dog's motivation to play the game. Nose work is a great way to wear out a high energy dog, yet it also can be enjoyed by older or less energetic dogs. It is an amazing confidence builder for fearful or clingy dogs. Blind, deaf and three-legged dogs have all successfully participated in K9 Nose Work. Dogs of all sizes and ages are able to excel in this sport.
In competition, teams search containers, rooms, outdoor areas, and vehicles. The handler must tell the judge when their dog has found an odor by calling "alert". Depending on the level of competition, dogs are searching for the scent of the essential oils anise, birch, and/or clove.
Laurel Scarioni is a Certified Nose Work Instructor with the National Association of Canine Scent Work. She competes in K9 Nose Work with her dogs Myrtle Mae (see photos to left) and Edgar. Myrtle Mae is working towards her Nose Work 3 title and Edgar is working towards his Nose Work 2 title. Laurel welcomes teams that just want to have fun learning the game. She also instructs teams that are competing in the sport.
